Today all the major networks are televising the Kavanaugh hearings about an allegation of sexual assault. It is to be determined whether he is a person who deserves a lifetime appointment to the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court. It comes after a year of the Me Too movement in which women have repeatedly explained why they were afraid of and traumatized by the thought of coming forward and accusing predators and rapists. It comes two days after Bill Cosby went to jail for 3-10 years for sexual assault. It comes two years after listening to the now president on an audio tape saying he can do what ever he wants to women because he's famous.
I didn't watch in the morning because lately I get so distressed at the division in this country that I decided to spare myself. I become distressed when it seems that no one running this country is interested in the good of the country but only in winning. But I am watching now and I realize it is an historic day for many reasons. The Supreme Court is at stake. Women's rights are at stake. The future of our country is at stake. Truth is at stake.
The president has repeatedly called the entire Democratic Party con men, evil, low-lifes and accuse them of running a smear campaign in this matter. But the Democratic Party did not come forth with these allegations, one reluctant but brave woman did. The president should, above all, be looking at the best interest of the country in something as crucial as the Supreme Court, but his interest is only in partisan wins. There is no understanding of the purpose of the Supreme Court in his reactions.
Judge Kavanaugh is as believable as Dr. Blasy Ford, but he also calls this a calculated conspiracy to bring him down by the Democrats. Suggesting that Democrats would willingly destroy a man's career and family. After making that serious accusation he said that he believed Dr Ford was assaulted and that all sexual abuse victims should be heard. Which one is it? He is outraged at being called evil but maybe those name-callers are simply echoing the president.
I really don't know who is telling the truth. Maybe both of them are. Maybe memory or alcohol fails them. But if horrific and disrespectful name-calling is destroying these people's lives as Kavanaugh suggests, to me there is only one person to blame for that and it is the person who should be leading this country with dignity and respect for all of its citizens.
Just like a principal in a school or a boss in an office, leaders set the tone of the place they preside over. If our country wants to return to dignity and civility we need to find new leaders. Kavanaugh said this whole thing is a circus and he's right, but neither he nor Dr Blasy Ford created it.
